Session Five Assignment. Conclusions



Going through my studies I came to the conclusion that the environment and society does have a factor in depression. 

Vitamin D is very helpful to the brain because it helps reduces inflation of brain cells, the inflated cells is a heavy cause of depression. Norwegians do not get much vitamin D because of the lack of sunlight during the winter, increasing the rates of depression. 

Alcohol does not help depression but in fact it makes it worse. Alcohol reduces your brain’s Serotonin. Serotonin controls the nerves of happiness, if lowered it causes depression. Anti- depressants job is to raise your Serotonin, thats why drinking shouldn’t be mixed with anti-depresants. The amount of drugs and alcohol being consumed is scaring because it is just increasing the depression rate.






Session 4

What has really surprised me about my research is the drug and alcohol use in Norway, it being higher than expected (no pun intended). I knew that because of the lack of sun the winter and fall would contribute to the depression but I didn’t know how much it affected the rate of depression. Going through many links I saw that half the population gets hit with depression and anxiety, more than I expected. I was also surprised by how much money is now going into Norway’s psychotic department trying to get people to understand depression.


Session three assignment. Thesis Statement

Thesis statement: The brutal climate and the homogeneous society in Norway is a major influence in Norway’s high depression rate.

In the winter the sun doesn’t stay up very long in Norway and higher north it doesn’t come up at all. Researchers think that the lack of vitamin D from missing the sunlight is a contributor to SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Because of the very cold  and cruel landscape it is harder to be outside to enjoy fresh air and to asbod vitamin D. The 5th “Star Wars” movie even filmed all the Hoth scenes in Norway, Hoth being the inhabitable ice plant.
Norwegians do like being outside very much and being active; if its hiking, running, and skiing. Many studies show that exercise helps reduce depression. Norway has the highest GPA, is named the best place to live, and has a very healthy organic food at that is easy to get. So why is Norway taunted with depression? It would seem like it would have the least amount of depression but more than half of the population have suffered from depression at one point in their lives. So there must be more than the harsh climate and lack of vitamin D affecting Norwegians.
Norway do have the resources to better themselves but it will take longer than others because of their homogeneous society, that don’t allow them to believe they can suffer from depression. Norwegians are very proud people who live a very good life finically and physical. There is a misconception that only people who have many things to be sad about have depression. In 2009, the average Norwegian over the age of 15 bought 6.8 litters of alcohol, not including the amount that was reported stolen. Seeking help is looked at as a weakness in Norwegian society; the high consumption of alcohol and drugs is the way that young people deal with their depression.

Session two assignment. Research question

Research question: What are some environmental factors that contribute to depression? 

The reason I am interested in this question is because going through my own struggles with depression, I have been told by people of different professions that Norwegians, and other people who live in the far up north; have a higher chance of having mood swings, anger issues, and depression. So as a norwegian I want to know why this is and how I can I prevent this when I have my own children. 

I also hope to understand if my own anger and mood problems is from this ancestral trend.
